Get Listed! by Brian Alt

Quick! Name the top 10 search engines and directories!

"Uhh... Yahoo!, InfoSeek, AltaVista..."

Okay, so you can do it. But how about the top 10 newsletter directories? Even if you can name them, can you say that you took the time to list your own newsletter in each one of them? If you can, congratulations, because you're probably seeing a steady flow of new subscribers from those listings. If not, this article will guide you on your way...

Marketing gurus will tell you that your best web site traffic will come from search engines, because those visitors are actively seeking out what you have to offer. The same principle applies to newsletter subscribers. Sure, you can get a quick 100+ from the NEW-LIST (http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/scout/new-list/), but do those subscribers actually read your zine? If you've submitted several different publications to the NEW-LIST as I have, you've probably noticed (if you see your subscription requests) that there are some addresses that show up every darn time, regardless of the topic of your newsletter. One has to wonder if these people actually ever read what they subscribe to, or if they're just "infoholics" that love to see their mailboxes filled with 1000 messages a day. (More on my "Theories" about the NEW-LIST in an upcoming issue.)

But subscriptions that come from ezine directories are another story. What are the people doing there if not looking for reading material in a topic that interests them? They may never read your ezine either, just like visitors to your site who found you through Yahoo might not buy anything from your site. But the quality of the each subscriber/visitor is definitely higher. And the chances that they'll be reading are much higher.

I think you get the point. Anyway, here are my top 10, in no particular order, along with some tips on how to get an effective listing on each one.

1. InfoBot.net Ezine Directory - http://www.infobot.net/add.html Hey, it's mine... Can you blame me for putting it first? :-) Use a descriptive description (not an ad). Make it keyword- rich, but don't bother to try spamming. It won't work because the submissions are reviewed by a real human (me).

2. John Labovitz's e-zine-list - http://www.meer.net/~johnl/e-zine-list/ I get more subscribers from this list than from any other. When picking keywords, pick as many from the list of the "Top 80 Keywords" (see the site) as possible, although don't pick ones that don't apply to your zine.

3. E-ZineZ Search Engine - http://www.e-zinez.com/submission.html Kate Schultz's excellent directory. You can use HTML in your descriptions, but don't go overboard. Keyword-rich description is a must.

4. eZINE Search - http://www.homeincome.com/search-it/ezine/ezine-add.html Over 3000 listings, arranged by category. Read the instructions on the submit form to ensure a good listing.

5. eZines Database - http://www.dominis.com/Zines/publishers/add-howto.html A searchable database of newspapers, magazines, journals and ezines. Tips available on the site.

6. Liszt, the mailing list directory - http://www.liszt.com/submit.html A list of over 90,000 mailing lists. A pretty straightforward submission process, just follow the directions.

7. LifeStyles Publishing - http://www.lifestylespub.com/cgi-bin/publishers.cgi?$id A great place to get listed if you want to find advertisers for your publication.

8. The ZineRack - http://www.zinerack.com/search/enterurl.html Organized by category, searchable by title.

9. The Flying Inkpot - http://inkpot.com/submit/ Keywords in the description and the URL are used.

10. 'ZinewOrld - http://www.oblivion.net/zineworld/add.html A nice (and fairly new) directory organized by category. Not searchable, so don't worry about keywords.

Just for good measure, here is a list of every newsletter directory I know of. If I'm leaving anything out, please feel free to email me (webmaster@infobot.net) or post it on the Publisher's Forum at: http://www.infobot.net/wwwboard/frameset.html

Don't feel overwhelmed. Just do a couple a day and you'll be done in no time :-)

If you'd like to share your experiences with any of these directories, I invite you to stop by the InfoBot.net Publishers' Forum and leave a post (http://www.infobot.net/wwwboard/frameset.html). Did you have trouble getting listed in any of them? Did you key your listings and find out which one brought you the most subscribers?

Good luck ;-)
